Consumers take their lives into the cloud

Consumers increasingly rely on cloud-based services to perform everyday tasks
35 percent of US Android and iPhone users interact with such non-voice apps as Facebook on their smartphones before even getting out of bed
Ericsson ConsumerLabs research findings were presented at Ericsson Business Innovation Forum in Silicon Valley on May 11
The ability to stay constantly connected to the internet is making consumers increasingly dependent on the cloud for their daily needs, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) ConsumerLab research has found. And while the smartphone revolution may have started this trend, the research has shown it is app usage that is likely to make it continue. Apps are actually shaping the way people are using connected devices.

Behavior around apps is also creating a new set of expectations when it comes to connecting consumer electronic devices. Devices must be connected if they are to be useful. For example, 54 percent of US users of portable storage devices said that they wanted to be able to synchronize these with their home PC files from anywhere. And 49 percent of camera owners in the sample wanted direct access to secure online storage for their photos.

Michael Bjrn, Head of Research at Ericsson ConsumerLab, says: "Our research found apps are appealing to people at an emotional level. Consumers become attached to a certain set of apps that makes them feel more in control of their lives, and turns everyday chores into positive experiences. Apps even give consumers a new sense of freedom; if a new situation arises, theres probably an app out there that could help them."

The research conducted in a number of locations, including the US, parts of Europe and Japan found that consumers are increasingly connecting to the internet via their smartphones before they even get out of bed. In 2011, 35 percent of US Android and iPhone users said that they interacted with such non-voice apps as Facebook on their smartphones before rising. The ease of internet access is enabling consumers to utilize an increasing number of cloud-based services to perform everyday tasks.

Consumers today depend less on the devices they use, and more on the apps that help them not only to connect to news or social-media sites, for example, but also to find a place to eat, organize their family schedules and other everyday activities. The app culture is turning into a new way of living and is now also spreading to tablet users and other devices.

Ericsson ConsumerLabs research also found that this "app culture" is easily transferable between mobile devices people are using apps on tablets in much the same way as they do on smartphones. The context and situation, not the device, determine how the consumer uses the app.

Ericsson ConsumerLab studies also reveal what may be a turning point regardless of the device they are using, people are increasingly discovering how difficult it is when they are not continuously connected to the cloud.

The findings of 18 months research carried out by Ericsson ConsumerLab into mobile-internet usage were presented at the Ericsson Business Innovation Forum in Silicon Valley in the US on May 11.

More interesting is the main module of the rear chamber. He has fundamental differences from the set to the current generation of phones Apple iPhone 4. On the camera there is not combined with her flare or device that prevents interference between the camera and flash. Since it is unlikely that the Apple completely abandoned the use of flash in the next generation, it is possible that it will move to the other side of the apparatus.

iOS exceed Android in the corporate segment

Apple reserves the leadership in the corporate sector, despite the rapid growth of Android, the conclusion made in the investigation of the representatives of Intermedia. In this case, although the home and for Apple and Google Android North American market has pushed iOS in global terms the situation has not changed - 61% of corporate customers using devices iPhone, while the proportion of users with devices based on Android is very small and is only 17 %. This is less than the group of users passing in the "other", which in total gain of 22%. This includes Windows Mobile, Windows Phone, HP's webOS and Symbian. Galaxy S 2 vs. iPhone, Thunderbolt, Focus (Web Browsing)

How does the Samsung Galaxy S II compare in terms of web browser speed against the iPhone 4, HTC Thunderbolt, and Samsung Focus? It smokes them all! Not only do pages load faster, but screen rotations are quicker, pinch-to-zoom is smoother, and scrolling is buttery smooth. That is thanks in part to the 1.2GHz Exynos CPU and 1GB of RAM.

Android To Surpass Apples App Store In Size By August 2011: Report

Theres no doubt Android Market will at some point offer more applications for download and/or purchase than Apples App Store, as the latters growth has been slowing down of late, while the Android application stores growth rate has been accelerating.

In a recent report, app store analytics company Distimo forecasted that Android would surpass the App Store in size before the end of July 2011.

Another research firm, Germany-based research2guidance, corroborates Distimos findings; the firm forecasts Android to blow past Apples App Store by August 2011.

Provided current growth rates for new app uploads are maintained, research2guidance expects Android Market to reach 425,000 apps next August, effectively overtaking App Store in size.

According to the firm, Android Market added 28,000 new apps in April 2011, whereas Apple lagged behind with only 11,000 new apps.

Evidently, theres always the question whether this matters at all. After all, the bulk of applications that are available for both platforms dont see much traction anyway, so how relevant it is whether there are 100,000 apps or 200,000 apps that are rarely, if ever, downloaded by anyone? (note that this goes for most if not all mobile application stores)

In fact, notes research2guidance, Android Markets high growth rate does not necessarily mean that the average mobile app developer will have a better shot at generating revenues from the store. In fact, the firm posits, the opposite may be true:

On the contrary, the success of an app store is negatively correlated to the success of an average developer. All analysis on the early months of an app store including the Android Market shows that average download numbers decrease dramatically after the first months or even weeks after the launch of the store. The long tail gets longer and longer while the top 5% gets richer and richer.

Be that as it may, Android Markets stunning growth is worth noting, especially because it came out the gates fairly slowly.

The smartphone market in the I quarter of 2011 according to Svyaznoy

Group of Companies Svyaznoy released its analysis report, which assesses the smartphone market in the I quarter of 2011. According to analysts the company, sales of smartphones for this period increased by 138% over the same period last year and amounted to 1.5 million units.

In monetary terms, the smart phone market in the I quarter of 2011 amounted to 16.6 billion rubles. This is 95% more than the same period last year, when the market reached 8.5 billion rubles.

The average cost of a smartphone for the year decreased by 18% and up to the I quarter of 2011 amounted to 11,000 rubles. Fall in the average cost is due, above all, the market development of high technology and cheaper production.

Significant changes have occurred in the price range of smartphones. The smartphone market has formed a new affordable price range "from 5,000 to 7,500 rubles, which accounted for most of the sales of smart phones based on the results of I quarter of 2011. Samsung takes 200K Galaxy S II pre-orders, passes iPhone 4

Samsung Galaxy S II hits 200K pre-orders in Korea

Samsung claimed an at least initial win for the Galaxy S II. The company took over 200,000 pre-orders across all three major Korean carriers between Monday of last week and the launch on Friday. About 160,000 of those were at the country's largest carrier, SK Telecom.
The pre-orders cracked 10,000 units in the first 29 minutes and doubled that in just over an hour, at 64 minutes.

Samsung's results blew past iPhone 4 pre-orders last August and set a relatively high but potentially surmountable barrier for Apple. The American firm took just over half as many pre-orders last year, but it also had just KT as its only carrier and only added SK Telecom as a carrier in March. Apple has yet to launch any iPhone on more than one Korean carrier at the same time.

Samsung's long-term, worldwide ambitions for the Galaxy S II are relatively modest. It plans to sell 10 million of the phones in all of 2011, or the same as it sold of the original last year. A wider range of Android phones should still lead to larger results, but its caution suggests it doesn't necessarily expect to beat other Android makers. Apple already shipped 18.65 million iPhones just in the winter.

Worldwide Mobile Phone Market Grew Nearly 20% in the First Quarter; Smartphones and Vendors Outside the Top 5 Keys to Growth, According to IDC

The worldwide mobile phone market grew 19.8% year over year in the first quarter of 2011 (1Q11) fueled by high smartphone growth, especially in emerging markets, and gains made by market challengers. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 371.8 million units in 1Q11 compared to 310.5 million units in the first quarter of 2010.

Smartphone growth worldwide, particularly in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan), Middle East and Africa (MEA), and Latin America, helped lift the overall market to a new first-quarter high. Increasingly, mobile phone makers and carriers are making smartphones affordable to a wider variety of people, which has helped drive the market to new heights. Smartphone-specific vendors, such as HTC, continue to grow sales at a steady clip as a result of this trend.

"Several notable vendors, including feature phone makers, outpaced the overall market, which contributed to share losses of some top suppliers," said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker. "The growth of companies outside the top 5 vendors vendors in the 'Others' category, such as Micromax, TCL-Alcatel, Huawei, and Research In Motion shows that the overall market is still very much ripe for share gains."

"At the same time, feature phones have represented the majority of mobile phone shipments, but still are under tremendous pressure from smartphones," adds Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC's Mobile Phone Technology and Trends team. "Even popular quick-messaging devices (phones with a QWERTY keyboard), once a bright spot within the feature phone market, appear to be losing steam as smartphones gain popularity. Still, IDC does not expect feature phones to disappear quickly as there is still strong demand across the globe."

Market Outlook

Nonetheless, IDC expects almost all of the worldwide mobile phone market's growth to be driven by smartphones throughout the forecast, which goes to 2015. "Increasingly smartphones will drive market growth. This means feature phone makers will either need to become smartphone dependent or consolidate that part of the market," noted Restivo.

Regional Analysis

The Asia/Pacific market grew thanks in part to strong mobile phone shipments to Greater China despite the seasonally slow quarter. Smartphone shipment growth was exceptional despite some key product launch delays. In Japan, the market underperformed IDC's forecast due to the impact of the earthquake and tsunami. Japan's largest mobile operators ordered fewer phones than expected in March.
In Western Europe, Android-based phones and iPhones helped grow the market in the seasonally slow quarter. New devices from HTC, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson sold well in most countries in the high-end tiers. Alcatel, Huawei, and ZTE Android devices helped drive mid-tier segment sales volume. Meanwhile, feature phone shipments receded as more smartphones hit the market. The CEMA markets performed well on a year-over-year basis despite civil unrest in some Gulf countries, such as Egypt, where sales were negatively impacted by the turbulence. Nokia and Research In Motion performed well in the regions overall.
In the United States last quarter, Apple's iPhone and the LTE-enabled HTC Thunderbolt were two smartphones introduced at Verizon Wireless that helped keep the category front and center of the overall mobile phone market. Feature phones, including once popular quick messaging devices, continued to lose ground. Similarly, in Canada, the market grew thanks to smartphones. BlackBerry, iPhone, and Android devices were best sellers.
The Latin America market growth continued last quarter as the gap between smartphones and feature phones narrowed. Smartphone shipments were aided by carriers, who are moving customers to 3G networks while vendors shipped more touchscreen and QWERTY models. New Android and Windows Phone devices were launched too, which helped drive smartphone growth. The average selling prices also declined in the region, thanks to aggressive expansion by Chinese vendors.
Top Five Mobile Phone Vendors

Nokia laid out its transformation strategy during the quarter, one that will embrace Windows Phone as its primary smartphone operating system, introduce further enhancements to its mobile phones, and invest in future disruptions to the mobile phone market. Until that strategy is fully realized, the company will rely on its current platforms to compete in the market. Its Symbian-powered smartphones continued to find a warm reception, and the company introduced the E6 and X7, both running on the new Symbian Anna software. In mobile phones, Nokia ramped up shipments of its C3 and X201 from last year and announced a dual-SIM phone with the C2. What remains to be seen is how quickly Nokia will introduce new phones as competition intensifies.

Samsung having posted a record Q1 shipment volume, further closed the gap against market leader Nokia and extended its lead ahead of third place vendor LG Electronics. Although feature phones comprised the majority of its shipments, smartphones represented a greater share from a year ago, nearly a fifth of its total volumes. Samsung appears well poised to reach its goal of 50 million smartphones shipped this year, as new models, including the Galaxy S II, 4G smartphones, and more mass-market smartphones are expected to reach the market later on.

LG unit shipments declined on a year-over-year basis for the third straight quarter. The phone shipment drop off was most noticeable in Europe and the CIS countries where shipments on a combined basis declined. The company hopes to deliver a better second quarter performance with the introduction of products such as the Revolution, which will run on the LTE network of Verizon Wireless, and the Big. The question for LG will be whether feature phone declines in emerging and other markets can be offset by smartphone gains in future.

Apple maintained its number 4 spot on IDC's Top 5 list thanks to a record quarter for unit shipments. The company posted the highest growth rate of the worldwide leaders. Apple's results were buoyed by strong sales on Verizon Wireless and additional carrier deals; the company is now on 186 carriers operating in 90 countries. The iPhone once again sold particularly well in developed economic regions of the world, such as North America and Western Europe.

ZTE held on to the number 5 slot in the rankings thanks to strong year-over-year growth in countries and regions where it does particularly well, such as China and Latin America. ZTE primarily sells low-cost feature phones but the company is making a concerted effort to ship more smartphones, which are based on the Android operating system, this year. The company has said it will try to create brand awareness and sell more devices in developed markets, such as the U.S., this year.
