Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) has today completed the asset purchase agreement to acquire certain assets of the Guangdong Nortel Telecommunications Equipment Company Ltd (GDNT). This acquisition gives Ericsson talented R&D engineers, manufacturing and services professionals, as well as manufacturing and research facilities in the China region and ensures continued development of the CDMA & GSM businesses.

"With these new assets, we can even better support our customers globally," said Rima Qureshi, Senior Vice President and Head of Business Unit CDMA Mobile Systems. "Our new and agile employees complement the existing R&D, manufacturing and services capabilities of our business."

Mats H Olsson, President of Ericsson China & North East Asia said: "The completion of this acquisition reaffirms our strong commitment to the China market, while greatly enhancing our existing R&D, manufacturing and services capabilities in the region. Today's closing follows the announcement on December 1, 2010, that Ericsson was entering into an asset purchase agreement to acquire certain assets of the Guangdong Nortel Telecommunication Equipment Company Ltd (GDNT).

Some 1,000 former GDNT employees, including approximately 550 R&D engineers will be integrated in to the Ericsson group over the coming months and will work under the Ericsson brand effective today. Former GDNT customers gain a business partner dedicated to the ongoing support of their networks and the assurance of a seamless transition. Manufacturing and Services will operate as a separate business entity, known as "Ericsson (Guangdong Shunde) Communications Company Limited, effective immediately.

Vodafone Announces the Vodafone Smart � A Smartphone for Everyone

Vodafone announces the launch of the Vodafone Smart, the latest handset in its own-brand range and the first in its category: a fully-featured smartphone with popular appeal for the next wave of data users.

The Vodafone Smart delivers a compelling smartphone experience, empowering customers to enter the world of the mobile internet, bringing together apps, navigation, social-networking and multimedia, all at a great price, in a great package.

The Vodafone Smart will be rolled out in a range of colours � from cool monochromes, through bold brights, to bespoke graphic designs. What�s more, customers will be able to personalise their phone, creating their own one-off covers on the web. With spring/summer and autumn/winter cover ranges planned, customers can build up a cover collection to suit their style and spirit.

The Android 2.2 software will give customers access to the full Android experience, including the Android Market�, Gmail�, Google Maps� and Google Talk� instant messaging. In addition, the phone has a zoom camera and a capacitive touchscreen as well as 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Vodafone design team have created the user experience with first-time smartphone users in mind and, as such, the homescreen comes pre-loaded with direct links to key content and features including Facebook�, Twitter�, email, Vodafone�s �Prepay Manager� for quick top-ups, Vodafone Music and finally the �Updates� widget, which gives customers easy access to a shortlist of leading Android Market apps and other services selected by local Vodafone editors.

The Vodafone Smart will be available across the Vodafone footprint by early summer. Germany, Italy and the UK will be among the first to sell the phone which will retail for around �90.

TOKYO, JAPAN --- NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced its 2011 summer lineup of 24 new mobile devices for launch on or after May 20, including nine smartphones, the largest and most diverse collection of smartphones ever released by DOCOMO, plus a wide variety of feature phones compatible with DOCOMO�s i-mode� mobile Internet platform, as well as mobile Wi-Fi� routers for DOCOMO�s Xi� (read �Crossy�) LTE extra-high-speed service.

The smartphone lineup offers user-friendly features for tethering, mobile-wallet (Osaifu-Keitai�) and infrared-based data exchange, plus downlink speeds up to a theoretical maximum of 14 Mbps starting from early June. The lineup also boasts the world�s first wirelessly chargeable smartphone. All Android� smartphones, including the globally popular Xperia� and GALAXY models, are preinstalled with Android 2.3.

DOCOMO�s new lineup meets a broad range of needs for mobile users in Japan:

Amazon is preparing a whole family of Android-devices?
