The evolution of Nokia and Ovi

GLOBAL Starting with first services on some of the new Nokia devices in July and August, Ovi services will be rebranded as Nokia services in a transition expected to continue into 2012. Each of the services under the Ovi umbrella will simply be rebranded as Nokia, with no planned disruption to the service roadmaps.

Nokias EVP and Chief Marketing Officer, Jerri DeVard explains the shift:
We have made the decision to change our service branding from Ovi to Nokia. By centralizing our services identity under one brand, not two, we will reinforce the powerful master brand of Nokia and unify our brand architecture while continuing to deliver compellingopportunities and experiences for partners and consumers alike.

The transition from Ovi to Nokia will begin in July this year, with the intention of it being completed across all countries and all services by the end of 2012. Its likely that anybody buying a new Nokia smartphone or mobile phone later this year will start to see the new branding on services included within. However anybody already owning a Nokia phone will see this new rebranding through future software updates.

Jerri continues:
The reasons for this decision includes the fact that Nokia is a well-known and highly-loved brand the world over. Our mobile experiences are tightly integrated with our devices there is no longer a differentiation. For example, if consumers want the best mobile navigation experience, they know its a Nokia that they can rely on. These last few years, and moving forward, our mission remains unchanged: we will continue our work to deliver compelling, unified mobile service offerings and next-generation, disruptive technologies.

This is solely a name-changing exercise and the service roadmaps will continue exactly as planned. The only difference consumers can expect to see is the replacement of the word Ovi with Nokia, not only on their device software but also in other places such as printed material or online media and advertisements. The transition should be a smooth and seamless one.

Nokia delivers Qt SDK 1.1 supporting faster app creation

Release of the Qt SDK 1.1 includes Qt Quick for faster, easier design of Touch Enabled User Experiences
Espoo, Finland - Nokia announced the release of Qt SDK 1.1 offering one integrated development environment for creating both consumer applications on Nokia's Symbian platform as well as for desktop applications such as Windows 7, Mac OSX and Linux. Using the Qt SDK to build their apps, developers have a complete, easy-to-use tool cutting app creation time in half for Nokia touch-screen devices.
Within the release of Qt SDK 1.1, is Qt Quick, a new UI creation kit that benefits both graphic designers and application developers. Designers can create fluid, animated user interfaces with complete project and code editing support for developers to then implement into the overall application. This speeds up the development process further bringing applications to market quicker.
Qt Quick also includes QML, a CSS & JavaScript-like language, that makes UI development for touch screens much easier to implement. In addition to Qt Quick, the Qt SDK 1.1 includes map and navigation features, imaging features for camera and photo gallery access, notification API plug-ins and other enhancements that enable developers to provide access to user content on the device.
"Developers are seeking to provide high quality, graphically rich applications to stand out in ever increasing crowded application stores", said Purnima Kochikar, Vice President, Forum Nokia. "With this new version of the Qt SDK, designers and developers can work together to achieve this quicker and more effectively."
Nokia and Qt SDK 1.1 - Large consumer audience for developer's apps
Consumers are downloading more than 5 million apps per day in Ovi Store, Nokia's on-device app store. With today's release of the Qt SDK 1.1 developers can now target more than 100 million Nokia devices (75 million of which are touch devices) in addition to the 150 million future Symbian smartphones Nokia intends to sell such as the newly announced Nokia E6, Nokia X7 and the Nokia Astound at T-Mobile. Nokia has patented a folding 3D Communicator

Nokia has filed a patent application entitled "Autostereoscopic rendering and display apparatus", in which it is a 3D-technology, and do not require special glasses. The patent has a sketch and description of Nokia 3D Communicator. This unit is made in the clamshell form factor and is equipped with two displays: the top with the support of three-dimensional images and the lower, touch, where are the controls.

Design complements several frontal cameras. They are designed to monitor the eye movements of users to the best way to create a clear three-dimensional image just from the standpoint of the user. In this case, he did not need glasses and when changing the angle of the picture will remain clear. The development also provides for the following point: 3D objects from the upper display will cast a shadow on the bottom screen. The solution is really unusual, and the Finnish company remains only to realize it.
