Xperia� PLAY Makes its Way to the US

We have some great news for our folks out in the US. All systems are go for the roll out of the first PlayStation� Certified smartphone, Xperia� PLAY on Verizon Wireless. While we�ve successfully launched Xperia� PLAY in other countries, our US customers have been readying themselves to make the jump to the Xperia� family in a whole new way. The Sony Ericsson Xperia� PLAY will be available in the US for pre-sale online at www.verizonwireless.com beginning May 19, and in stores on May 26 for $199.99 with a new two-year customer agreement.
Sony Ericsson Xperia� Play customers will need to subscribe to a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan and a smartphone data package. Nationwide Talk plans begin at $39.99 for monthly access and an unlimited smartphone data plan is $29.99 for monthly access.

Huawei Launches xDSL Cards with Unparalleled Port Density

Breakthrough product significantly decreases OPEX for operators

Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, launched two types of copper access cards with unparalleled port density: the 48-port COMBO card and the 64-port VDSL2 card. These products will enhance solutions in public switched telephone network (PSTN) migration and broadband access, and will enable operators to decrease OPEX by reducing room size by 30 to 50 percent.

Mr. You Yiyong, President of Huawei's Access Network Product Line, said, "Dedicated to our customers' demands, Huawei has never stopped innovating in the fixed access arena, including copper access, and strives to help operators maximize the potential of copper wires and provide the best products and solutions to their customers."

Combining ADSL2+, voice, and splitter functions in one card, the 48-port COMBO card significantly reduces the amount of required space in telecommunications rooms, simplifies copper cable routing, and reduces total power consumption. The 48-port COMBO card also assists in integrating traditional time-division multiplexing (TDM) voice systems into future-oriented VoIP systems, while also providing broadband access. Devices equipped with the COMBO cards will not only have a higher degree of integration but will also be up to 70 percent smaller.

In cases when ADSL is unable to provide sufficient bandwidth for fast-growing services (such as high-bandwidth video services), VDSL2 is a viable alternative, as it is able to provide over 50M of bandwidth, while reusing the existing copper wire networks. With an energy-efficient design, the 64-port VDSL2 card can be equipped with either an embedded or an external splitter to accelerate the deployment of VDSL2. With an embedded splitter, the 64-port VDSL2 card can significantly increase the integration of devices, and, as a result, the room space can be saved by at least 50%.

Furthermore, both cards are equipped with the MELT line test function, enabling them to quickly identify line faults, eliminating the need for investment in dedicated test instruments, and thereby reducing OPEX.

To date, Huawei has served one-third of all global broadband users with its SingleFAN solution, providing super broadband access that enriches people's communications and their lives.

Awards support need for widgets

The Ericsson Widgets Awards 2011 have resulted in the creation of many new widgets that are much sought after on the market.

Patrik Hedlund, Marketing Manager at Ericsson�s Business Unit Multimedia, says that there is a big need for widgets on the market, and that this was the main reason for launching the Widgets Awards.

"We have had lots of positive feedback from our operators saying that these are the kinds of widgets they�ve been looking for," he says. "They also appreciate that we are carrying out this activity for the developer community."

The winning entry was a location-based service that provides local news wherever you are in the world. The Mobile World News application was developed by Victor Garzon and Jhon Samboni who attend the Universidad de Cauca in Colombia. The team will be sharing the top prize of SEK 150,000 (about USD 25,000).

Hedlund says the competition attracted entries from all over the world, with China and India well represented, and even numbers of professional programmers and academics among the entrants.

"It has been an excellent challenge, resulting in many great widgets that we hope to use going forward," Hedlund says.

In second place, and collecting a prize of SEK 100,000 (about USD 16,000), was an entrant from the ArcMage software company in G�vle, north of Stockholm, Sweden. Dan Kopparhed and Anders St�dberg wrote a game application called Quest, which enables a game master to organize outdoor treasure hunts using GPS services.

In third place, receiving a cash prize of SEK 50,000 (about USD 8,000), was another Swedish entry called Personal Shopper, developed by Fredrik W�ngberg at Strikersoft. The widget promises to take the worry out of shopping by enabling users to create their own shopping lists and then tick off items as they make their purchases.

All the winning widgets, and many of the others entered, will now be marketed through operators that have implemented Ericsson�s e-store, which is where all the company�s applications are stored. Among the many excellent widgets that did not make it to the final was a medical application that enables users to take pictures of their skin conditions and then send them to participating skin specialists for diagnosis. Another optimizes transactions between taxi drivers and their clients.

This is the first time Ericsson has held a widget competition and the aim is for the company to hold a similar event next year.

"We want to be perceived as a driver in this area and to be viewed as a company that encourages people to develop their ideas," Hedlund says.

Helena Norrman is appointed Senior Vice President, Head of Group Function Communications at Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), effective as of May 23, 2011. Norrman is currently Vice President, Communications Operations at Group Function Communications and responsible for communications strategy, operations planning and CEO support.

Hans Vestberg, President and CEO of Ericsson, says: "Communications plays an instrumental role in supporting the successful execution of our strategy. The need for innovation, new thinking and continuous transformation will require strong communications support and with Helena Norrman we have the right person to lead this work".

With a Master's degree in International Business Administration from Link�ping University in Sweden, Norrman has more than 15 years experience in communications. After working as a communications consultant with Swedish firm JKL, Norrman joined Ericsson's Group Function Communications in 1998.

Since then she has held positions within media relations, internal communications, marketing communications, brand as well as communications strategy and planning. In 2006 she was appointed Head of Internal communications and in 2008 Norrman was appointed Vice President, Internal and Marketing Communications at Group Function where she headed the work to develop Ericsson's new brand strategy and platform.

Norrman will be member of Ericsson's Executive Leadership Team as of May 23, 2011, replacing Henry St�nson.

Henry St�nson, presently Senior Vice President, Head of Group Function Communication, will leave the company on December 31, 2011, after more than nine years with the company. St�nson will become a partner with international corporate communications agency Brunswick in Stockholm and will gradually transit into this new role during the remainder of the year.

Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO) has awarded Ericsson with the "Excellent Initiative towards Green Technology" award at the �Telecom Technology Awards�.

The Telecom Technology Award is organized for the first time by FIEO to honor companies who are contributing by bringing in innovation and promoting efficiency in communication technology.

Ericsson has been recognized for its sustainable and green solutions that aim to enable a low carbon economy by making the networks more efficient in terms of energy consumption. Ericsson solutions such as Smart Site, MSC-S Blade Cluster server, GSM RBS 2111 Main Remote, Network Energy Optimization , BTS Power Saving Feature, Bio-fuels and Tower Tube were recognized as industry leading innovations in this field.

Ericsson closes the Acquisition of GDNT, China

Ensures continued development of CDMA and GSM businesses
All assumed agreements will be honored and fulfilled
Adds R&D, manufacturing and services capabilities

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) has today completed the asset purchase agreement to acquire certain assets of the Guangdong Nortel Telecommunications Equipment Company Ltd (GDNT). This acquisition gives Ericsson talented R&D engineers, manufacturing and services professionals, as well as manufacturing and research facilities in the China region and ensures continued development of the CDMA & GSM businesses.

"With these new assets, we can even better support our customers globally," said Rima Qureshi, Senior Vice President and Head of Business Unit CDMA Mobile Systems. "Our new and agile employees complement the existing R&D, manufacturing and services capabilities of our business."

Mats H Olsson, President of Ericsson China & North East Asia said: "The completion of this acquisition reaffirms our strong commitment to the China market, while greatly enhancing our existing R&D, manufacturing and services capabilities in the region. Today's closing follows the announcement on December 1, 2010, that Ericsson was entering into an asset purchase agreement to acquire certain assets of the Guangdong Nortel Telecommunication Equipment Company Ltd (GDNT).

Some 1,000 former GDNT employees, including approximately 550 R&D engineers will be integrated in to the Ericsson group over the coming months and will work under the Ericsson brand effective today. Former GDNT customers gain a business partner dedicated to the ongoing support of their networks and the assurance of a seamless transition. Manufacturing and Services will operate as a separate business entity, known as "Ericsson (Guangdong Shunde) Communications Company Limited, effective immediately.

SEB Enskilda acted as Ericsson's sole financial advisor in the transaction.

More than 80 journalists from thirty countries visited Ericsson�s third annual Business Innovation Forum, held May 10-11 in Silicon Valley, California. Ten speakers with diverse backgrounds � ranging from a firefighter to a venture capitalist � joined Ericsson executives and specialists for an agenda that touched on all aspects of the Networked Society and its potential to improve the lives of people, business, and society.

Keynote speaker Paul Saffo, Managing Director, Foresight at Discern Analytics and Consulting Associate Professor at Stanford University, spoke of the fundamental changes in our world economy: from a production economy to a consumer economy, until the November 2008 crash, when Saffo says the economy changed immediately to what he calls a "creator economy."

"The central actor of the new economy often both consumes and creates at the same time. You used to have to be a university professor to make an entry in an encyclopedia. Now, Wikipedia lets anyone do it � and even if we think it�s free, we�re paying with the information we contribute," said Saffo.

Firefighter Chris Russo acknowledged the transformative power of mobile. "When people are forced to evacuate, they take two things with them: their kids and the phone. It�s time to bring emergency services into the Networked Society and turn victims into assets," said Russo. His startup company Elerts has developed an application that enables that.

Speakers from operators Sprint and Verizon spoke about their collaboration centers, to boost the creative process and speed time-to-market for ideas in connecting devices. Part of the program featured a visit to Sprint�s m2m collaboration center.

The CTO of Sony Ericsson, Jan Uddenfeldt, stressed the importance of openness in the device field. "Android is an open operating system, and that is driving the market and driving growth. The second day of the forum centered on mobile broadband and LTE uptake learning as well as Silicon Valley�s special characteristics as an innovation hub. Brian Wilcove, General Partner at Sofinnova Ventures, said: "If you are awake at 3am and want to discuss your business idea with someone, you just go down the street in Silicon Valley and someone is there to talk to.
