"One UN" initiative runs in three countries, starting in Tanzania
Ericssons contributions drive fulfillment of Millennium Development Goals and our vision of a Networked Society
Ericsson Response supports the One UN initiative in Tanzania by sending two ICT specialists to Tanzania to work with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). In this engagement, Ericssons (NASDAQ: ERIC) commitment through Ericsson Response a voluntary employee organization is to enhance humanitarian relief work by bringing skilled staff to improve ways of working in partner initiatives.
The One UN initiative in Tanzania, Mozambique, and Rwanda, aims to make the United Nations a more effective partner to the government with better coordination to maximize the impact of its work in the country.
Two Ericsson Response volunteers were in Tanzania to provide on-site support for the integration of computer systems for one month. During that time, they analyzed the needs of the UN organizations in terms of what information is critical in humanitarian work, set up the applications provided by UN for knowledge sharing and information gathering, and trained the organizations staff.
Tanzania is one of eight pilot countries in the UNs program. UN agencies used to be independent and separate; the new program, supported by Ericsson volunteers, will feature wireless integration across borders for participating agencies. The new network provides efficiencies and cost savings as well as several additional services which are not possible when each agency had independent connections.
Shahan Ara Quadir, Head of WFP IT and One UN IT Project Manager in Tanzania, says: "Ericsson Response has been supporting WFP for almost a decade by deploying highly competent and experienced staff to work with us. Through developing and implementing these IT solutions in partnership with Ericsson, we are reaching the primary objective of One UN in Dar es Salaam to be more coherent, effective and efficient."
Tade Oyinlola, Director of Learning & Competence Development for region sub-Saharan Africa, and a volunteer who was part of the relief effort to support the victims of the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan, says: "Our involvement in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania is one way we can contribute to humanitarian relief. We are excited about the opportunity given to the Ericsson Response volunteers to use their skills and competence to improve the effectiveness of the UN in the region."
Notes to editors

The Ericsson Tanzania office was established in 2003 trading as a branch providing Telecommunication Services on behalf of Ericsson AB Sweden. However, the companys presence in Tanzania goes as far back as 1997, when Ericsson was established as a Project Office and was awarded a big contract to supply Equipment and Services to the sole fixed line operator at that time, throughout Tanzania.
Ericsson has also supplied telecom equipment and services to the Tanzania Railways Corporation, which owns and operates one of the largest Railway Networks in East Africa.
